What does paint thickness gauge do, and how is it useful?

A coating thickness gauge, also known as paint thickness gauge or paint meter is used to measure thickness of the dry film. Dry film thickness is the most complicated thickness measurement in the entire coating industry because of its impact on the quality, coating process, and cost. Such measurements can be used to evaluate the expected life of the coating, the appearance, and the performance of the product. The measurement further ensures the compliance of the product with all the international standards.

A paint thickness gauge uses different principles and mechanisms, and the ultrasonic principle is one of them. This technique is used for measuring the thickness of the paint on all the non-metal substrates like fiberglass and plastic. The probe of the instrument comprises an ultrasonic transducer that works by sending a pulse throughout the coating. This pulse then reflects from the substrate to the transducer and is further converted into a high-frequency electric signal. It is then analysed to check the thickness of the coating. The price of a paint thickness gauge with such technology depends upon many factors, such as the brand name, size, and others.

How does ultrasonic paint thickness gauge work?

As mentioned above, the ultrasonic paint thickness gauge works by sending an ultrasonic vibration into a coating using a probe with the assistance of a couplant put on the surface. Each of these instruments comes with a common glycol gel.

Once the couplant is applied to the coated part's surface, the probe is placed flat on it. Pressing it down starts the measurement and lifting the problem after hearing a double beep or seeing a green indicator light blinking holds the last measurement. You may take a second reading at the same spot by holding the probe down continuously on the surface.

You can further attain accuracy while using a paint thickness gauge during measurement with the following steps:

1. It would help if you periodically zero the probe using the Zero menu option to compensate for probe wear effects and extreme temperature.

2. It is good to lay the included plastic shims on a smooth, hard surface and then measure them individually.

Now that you know the mechanism of the paint thickness gauge, use it meticulously to measure the paint thickness!
